Your guide to frameless box windows

By Grand View

For sheer style and creating a true focal point in a room and a conversation piece for years, frameless box windows excel on all fronts. With their super slim, distinctive, and completely bespoke design, these windows promise a touch of contemporary elegance in any room. Here is all you need to know about frameless box windows or oriel windows, as they are also called.

What Are Frameless Box Windows?

As the name implies, frameless box windows feature a projecting box design with framed tops bottom and side frames with framed or frameless corners.

Utilising the latest in highly insulated glass and minimal insulated frames, these windows not only create a statement-piece window but also allow more light into a room and provide a greater feeling of space.

One of the standout features of these windows is the illusion they create of being outdoors, offering excellent views of your garden or driveway.

They are also suitable for commercial properties, enhancing brightness in workplaces, shops, and offices.

Grandview Home Improvements expertly crafts these products using the latest generation aluminium systems, high performance glass and high-specification sealants and components.

How Are Frameless Box Windows Made?

Unlike our standard range of modern windows with opening framed designs, these windows are not part of a pre-defined ‘system’. They are entirely bespoke, crafted by us using the finest quality glass and structurally bonded with high-quality specific silicone.

When we measure for these windows, we consider the overall size, design, glass specification, performance requirements, and any factors specific to your property and installation.

Some windows are pre-assembled off-site and ready for installation, while others are assembled at your property.

As these windows are custom-made, there are no standard sizes. We use the best glass to create square or angled frameless windows without corner frames. Additionally, the quality of our products ensures they are long-lasting and highly thermally efficient.

The concept of box or projecting windows is not new. The pop-out glass design has long been popular in various properties, always creating the illusion of a larger room. Pair these windows with an interior window seat, and you gain extra space and a lovely area to read, relax, or simply enjoy the additional light, which is particularly beneficial in winter.

How safe are Oriel and Box Windows?

There are several ways to ensure that frameless box windows are safe, secure, insulated, and strong.

Firstly, the glass we use is the best in laminated and toughened glass or a combination of both. Laminated glass is particularly strong due to its interlayers, and in the rare event of breakage, it holds together.

The design of these windows often means that no additional structural supports, such as steel or timber, are required. The window’s design supports the weight and load from the top and sides.

While most of these window types require some form of base support, each installation is unique. The overall size of the window typically dictates the necessary support.

What Is the Energy Efficiency of Oriel and Box Windows?

Our frameless windows promise low U-Values due to the quality of the glass, spacer bar design, coatings, and glass thickness we use. U-values can vary between products.

You can contact us for a calculation based on your specific sizes and design should you or your architect need the insulation values for these windows. We ensure all our windows meet current Building Regulations for new installations and replacement windows.

What Glass Options Are Available with Frameless Oriel and Box Windows?

In addition to laminated or toughened glass, several options are available. All the glass features a black ceramic and spandrel coating at the edges, concealing where the glass joints meet and creating an all-glass appearance. Can I have opening frameless box windows?

The design of these windows is intended to be large, fixed, and open-plan. While it is possible to include opening elements, a frame is required, which introduces visible aluminium profiles. A frame is necessary for opening elements for ventilation, as the window locks, hardware, hinges, and other components cannot be attached directly to the glass.
